OFT publishes results of market study into personal current accounts

On 16 July 2008, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) published the results of its market study into personal current accounts. It has concluded that the market may not work well for consumers due to a lack of transparency and complexity in bank charges which make it difficult for consumers to accurately compare different bank accounts. The OFT considers that this weakens banks' incentives to compete and that there is much that the banks could do to improve how the market works. The OFT has stated that it will spend the coming months talking to banks and consumer groups to try and achieve greater clarity, transparency and consumer empowerment. This may be achieved through voluntary action on the part of the banks, or, if necessary, through greater regulation, or a reference to the Competition Commission.
